Sysadmin Quests

Adventures where you act with real Linux commands. Every place is a directory, every object a file. 16 independent stories: start with The Eraser if you have never opened a terminal.

Stuck? Do as the pros do: man command opens the manual, command --help gives a summary, and man -k word finds the command that does what you want.

The game was written in French and translated into English. The places and the documents you read have English names (cd Lighthouse, cat email_kofi.txt); some things on the stories' servers (folders, websites, databases) keep their French names, as they would on a server run by a French team.

Put the game on your site

The game is free software and fits in any page with two lines:

<script type="module" src="https://sysadmin.rouages.net/integration/quetes-de-sysadmin.js"></script>
<quetes-de-sysadmin langue="en"></quetes-de-sysadmin>

Full instructions (in French): docs/INTEGRER.md.

Why names ending in .internal and .example?

The machines in the game are fictional, but their names follow the real rules: .internal is reserved for private networks (ICANN, 2024), .example for examples (RFC 6761), and the addresses 192.0.2.x, 198.51.100.x and 203.0.113.x for documentation (RFC 5737). A made-up name could belong to someone: what you try here never targets a real machine.
